Pictures of Clayton, GA

01-29-2007

Clayton is a town in the extreme north of Georgia, only a few minutes from the border with north Carolina. We went up there hunting for a new house for Jeannemarie's parents. It was a rather large town with a thriving main street. This was a few weeks before Christmas, so much of the town was decorated. There was a definite german influence to the architecture and there were a number of restaurants and stores. There were lots of good views from the town as well with mountains constantly in the background.

Clayton is the county seat of Rabun County. The town was orginally called Dividings as it was the intersection of three Cherokee trails, two of which became Georgia highways. The area was explored by a famous American naturalist named William Bartram in 1775. The city was incorporated in 1823 and was named for Judge Augustin S. Clayton who was a local representative as well as a Federal Congressman representing Georgia. It was first known as Claytonsville, but was eventually shortened to Clayton.

The town had a number of intersting furniture and appliance stores. There was even one that specialized in restoring antique appliances to work to today's standards.

Logan Edwin Bleckley Cheif Justice GA Supreme Court from 1887 to 1894 worked here in his youth for his father. There is a monument to him in Veterans park. (Though he is actually buried in Oakland Cemetary in Atlanta).

At one end of the town there was a giant stone church. I forgot to get a closer look though to get a name.

There was a restaraunt called Inger's not far from where we parked just off Main Street. It looked to be VERY busy. In the space of about 5 minutes I saw at least four car loads of people park and go in.

Half the town appeared to be owned by someone Named Reeves. There were various stores named after him or her, but this one had the nicest architecture.

The Rock House used to be Clayton's firehouse, now it is a public park. It had some nice sculptures out front.
