Pictures of Japser, GA - Main Street09-10-2006We thought Jasper was going to be small. We were quite surprised by the size if it. Not only did it have shops, restaurants, and civic building, but it also had several historical buildings, statues, and fountains. The courthouse was quite interesting. It had a neat sculpture of bears out in front, which Jeannemarie is getting a closer look at. Jasper is the county seat of Pickens County. It looks like there was a bit of Courthouse controversy over displaying the 10 Commandments. We notices that there was a set posted not on the courthouse grounds, but on the building next door, a law office. Interestingly enough, former Congressman Bob Barr was on the list of attorneys. Jasper appears to be all about marble. They even have a marble festival in October. At one end of town there was a huge marble obelisk. Behind it there was a neat wooden bridge that led to a small inn and restaurant. The restaurant had a nice menu. Too bad it was a little to early for us to have lunch. They had a really great looking historic jailhouse in the middle of town. It was about to celebrate its 100th anniversary. It had a nice rough looking marble façade. Right next to the jailhouse was a little log cabin. Apparently the Kirby-Quinton Log Cabin was a reconstruction from pieces of an early larger home. It’s supposedly filled with antiques, but it was closed the day we were there. At one end of town there was a little park that was kind of wedged in a fork in the road. It had a few tables, a gazebo swing and a very interesting fountain made from large chunks of marble.
