Main Street Canton, GA09-04-2006Canton was our last stop for the day. It's really a small city rather than a small town. They had quite a few nice shops to browse the windows of (they were all closed for Labor Day). Main Steet (actually there were two: East Main St. and West Main St.) was built up for about a quarter of a mile. There was even a local theater with a pretty busy season planned. There were some very well architected municiple buildings and a nice town square with a gazeebo. The town appears to be located on a tall hill or small mountain. From the center of the town, every direction goes downhill and distant views of mountains can be seen between some of the buildings. Canton even had it's own art center. Also, they were ramping up for a festival called Riverfest at the end of the month that will be held in a rather large public park a few blocks from the city center. Jeannemarie and I got out of the car and strolled around for a bit. We probably could have spent several hours there if anything had been open.
