Pictures of Adairsville, GA

10-25-2006

Adairsville was name for a Scottish settler who married a Cherokee woman back when it was a small Cherokee village. In the mid 1800s, it became a railroad town. During the civil war, it bore witness to the Great Locomotive Chase, for which it now holds an annual festival in October. There was also a battle here when General Sherman arrived and confronted Johnston's forces. The town still has a busy rail line and is located just off I75 so it is somewhat well maintained and populated.

The business district seemed quite lively and had number of restaurants, antique stores, and specialty shops all of which looked quite successful.

The town straddles the tracks. One side was built up, but the other was still a bit run down. It was more of a warehouse district, some of which were burned out.

The towns train station was also the visitor center. Next to it was a very large gazebo that looked large enough to house some big events.

The police station looked to be brand new, though it was rather small. Perhaps there is almost no crime there.
