Pictures of Lumpkin, GA

11-21-2006

We took a day trip to go hiking in Providence Canyon in south Georgia near the Alabama border. Nearby, was the town of Lumpkin (not to be confused with Lumpkin County). It is the county seat of Stewart County and is named for Wilson Lumpkin, a governor of Georgia as well as a U.S. Rep and a Senator.

The town was a stop stagecoach route from Americus, GA to Eufaula, AL where residents could stay at the Bedingfield inn. In this thumbnail, the inn is the building on the left side. Click on the thumbnail to see the full sized picture where the inn is a bit more clear

The original courthouse was build in 1831 and at one time served as a block house to protect women and children against Indian attacks. Some of today's courthouse dates back to 1896, but most of it was build in 1923 after a Fire in 1922.

While the courthouse and the inn were really nice, our trip through the town started to sour at City Hall which was kind small and run down. It sort of gave the impression that it was about to be boarded up.

Then we hit the really bad part of town. Just off the square we went through one of those areas that prompted us to roll up our windows and lock the doors. There was number of run down, boarded up buildings which people just loitering out in front and some prominent gang graffiti announcing someone's death.
